Chaunsa Mango from Uttar Pradesh — Traceable
Chaunsa closes the mango season the way it should end — unhurried and sweet. Grown across Uttar Pradesh’s Malihabad–Lucknow belt, alongside Saharanpur and the state’s other mango tracts, Chaunsa arrives after Dasheri and Langra have gone, typically from late June through August. Uttar Pradesh’s mango belts are centred around Lucknow, Malihabad, Saharanpur, Varanasi, and Bulandshahar, with Chausa grown alongside Dasheri, Langra, and Safeda in the region.
The fruit is easy to recognise: a deep golden skin over flesh that is soft, richly aromatic, and nearly free of fibre — a texture that separates it from earlier, firmer varieties in the season. The fruit has a golden-yellow color when it is soft, is almost fiberless, and has an aromatic, pleasant, sweet flavor. It is also known by an older, more evocative name — Samar Bahisht, “fruit of paradise” — a name still used in the orchards where it was first propagated. The Chausa mango, also known as Samar Bahisht (“Fruit of Paradise”), was first grafted on a large scale by Abdul Hameed Khan Malihabadi of Malihabad, India.

Why Uttar Pradesh, and why Malihabad
The Malihabad tehsil near Lucknow is the largest of Uttar Pradesh’s mango belts and the traditional home of the grafting families who shaped several of India’s best-known cultivars. Malihabad is the largest of Uttar Pradesh’s 14 designated mango belts and accounted for 12.5% of all mango production in the state in 2013, with hundreds of varieties grown here including Chausa, Langda, Safeda, and most famously the Dasheri.
It was these Malihabad orchards — not the town of Chausa itself — that took Chaunsa from a named fruit into a stable, grafted cultivar that could be reliably reproduced tree after tree. The Chausa mango was first grafted on a large scale by Abdul Hameed Khan Malihabadi of Malihabad, India. The same alluvial soils and hot, humid summers that suit Dasheri and Langra give UP’s Chaunsa its own character: a little less intensely sweet than the Multan fruit grown further west, closer in style to the other Malihabad varieties it shares an orchard with.

Sourcing note: Aamrai’s Chaunsa is sourced from organically cultivating orchards within Uttar Pradesh’s established mango belt, harvested at the right maturity and moved out within hours — the same discipline we apply to our Ratnagiri Alphonso and Kutch Kesar lots.
On the table
Chaunsa is eaten fresh, chilled, in aamras, or blended into shrikhand and lassi — the low fibre and high juice content make it a natural choice wherever a smooth pulp is wanted rather than a firm slice.
