Description

Neelam is a late-season Indian mango variety grown mainly in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, known for its fibreless flesh, rich flavour, and long shelf life. It typically ripens from late May through July, after most premium varieties have finished. Neelam has a rich, aromatic, sweet flavour with a firmer, denser texture than Alphonso and no stringy fibre in the flesh.
Neelam is primarily cultivated in Tamil Nadu (Salem, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri) and Andhra Pradesh (Chittoor, Krishna), with additional production in Karnataka.

The mango that closes the season

Most premium Indian mango varieties — Alphonso, Kesar, Payri — are finished by early June. Neelam is the exception. Grown chiefly in Tamil Nadu’s Salem, Krishnagiri, and Dharmapuri belt and in Andhra Pradesh’s Chittoor and Krishna districts, it ripens later, typically from late May through July, with pockets of availability into August, placing it firmly among the late-season varieties alongside Fazli and Safeda. For a fruit whose commercial life is otherwise compressed into ten weeks, that extra stretch matters — both for growers and for anyone still craving mango once the early varieties have gone.

The fruit itself is medium-sized, oblong, and closer to yellow-gold than blushed red smooth-skinned, bright yellow on ripening, with no red blush at all, a trait that distinguishes it from crosses sometimes sold under its name. The flesh is a warm yellow-orange, dense, and — notably for a mango essentially free of fibre, carrying a rich, aromatic flavour. It holds its shape well when cut, which is why it turns up in fruit salads and platters as often as it’s eaten on its own. Its keeping quality is also unusual: alongside Alphonso, Neelam is recognised as one of the Indian varieties with notably better post-harvest shelf life than most.

A parent, not just a variety

Neelam’s significance in Indian mango breeding runs deeper than the fresh fruit trade. It is the mother parent of Mallika, one of independent India’s first deliberately bred hybrid mangoes a cross of Neelam and Dasheri developed at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) in New Delhi under horticulturist Dr Ramnath Singh, aiming to combine Neelam’s dependable late-season yield with Dasheri’s sweetness. Neelam was also used as one of the parents behind Amrapali, the compact, high-density hybrid released in 1971. In practice, this means Neelam isn’t a regional curiosity — it’s foundational breeding stock behind two of modern India’s most planted hybrid mangoes.

The variety travelled beyond India too: it’s grown widely enough outside South Asia that Wikipedia’s list of mango cultivars places Neelum among the recognised Indian-type varieties cultivated commercially in Pakistan and in Florida’s mango-breeding orchards, alongside other late-season and Indian-type varieties grown internationally.

Botany, briefly

Like every mango variety, Neelam belongs to Mangifera indica, in the cashew family Anacardiaceae — a detail worth knowing because it’s why people with cashew or pistachio allergies sometimes react to mango skin. The genus is thought to have originated in the India–Myanmar border region and been in cultivation for several thousand years, long before formal named varieties like Neelam were selected and propagated. Most Indian mango trees, Neelam included, are monoembryonic — each seed produces a single seedling that is a natural hybrid, which is why Neelam and every other named Indian cultivar is propagated by grafting rather than by seed, to keep the fruit true to type.
