Rumani, the “Apple Mango” of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, is prized for its near-perfect round shape, thin greenish-yellow skin blushed with pink, and exceptionally juicy, fine-fibred pulp. A GI-linked regional heirloom rather than a hybrid, it is South India’s traditional choice for fresh eating, juice, and milkshakes.

Rumani belongs to a different lineage of Indian mango altogether. Where Alphonso and Kesar are prized for dense, saffron-hued pulp, Rumani is valued for something rarer in a mango: shape and juice. Round as an apple rather than oval, it carries a thin, light greenish-yellow skin that ripens with a soft pinkish-red blush at the crown — a look distinctive enough to have earned it the local name “Apple Mango” in Chennai’s markets.
The variety is a traditional cultivar of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, long grown in home gardens and small orchards rather than bred in a research station. It is monoembryonic — each seed produces a single, true-to-type seedling — which has allowed the variety to persist through generations of local cultivation. Fruit is modest in size, typically 200–300 grams, with pulp that is light yellow-orange, mildly sweet, and carries a high juice-to-pulp ratio with minimal fibre. This makes it a natural fit for fresh juice, milkshakes, and lassi, alongside eating out of hand.
Trees are of medium size with a spreading, dense canopy, flowering in a solid white inflorescence and bearing well under South Indian conditions. Rumani is regarded as a mid-to-late season variety, filling the market window after the early flush of other South Indian mangoes.
