There are mangoes that are famous across India and then there are mangoes that are famous within a kingdom. Zardalu is the latter: a mango so beloved in Bhagalpur, Bihar, that it was once gifted to Mughal emperors and continues to be offered to deities in temples to this day.
At Aamrai Organic, we are passionate about uncovering and celebrating India’s extraordinary mango heritage, and few varieties embody that spirit quite like Zardalu.
Zardalu (also spelled Jardalu or Zardalu) is a heritage mango variety indigenous to the Bhagalpur district of Bihar in eastern India. The name is derived from the Persian word ‘zard’, meaning golden or yellow, an apt description of its brilliant golden-yellow skin when fully ripe. It holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, recognising its exclusive origin in Bhagalpur.
The mango season for Zardalu is short and precious, typically from mid-June through July. What makes it stand apart is its medium size, thin skin, minimal fibre and an aroma so heady and floral that the neighbourhood knows when someone’s opened a crate.
Bhagalpur, known historically as the ‘Silk City’ of India, has an equally rich mango culture that dates back several centuries. The orchards along the banks of the Ganga in Bhagalpur have been cultivating Zardalu for generations and the mango has become inseparable from the region’s identity.
Local legend holds that Zardalu was a prized mango variety during the Mughal era, frequently sent as gifts to the royal court and valued for its intense sweetness and exceptional aroma. Today, it continues to be a cultural currency in Bihar, gifted during weddings, sent to relatives in cities and offered during religious festivals like Chhath Puja.
Zardalu offers a flavour experience unlike many other Indian mango varieties. Here’s its distinctive flavour profile:
Sweetness: Very high natural sugar content, making it one of India’s sweetest mango varieties.
Acidity: Low, resulting in a remarkably smooth and gentle finish.
Aroma: Intensely floral and fruity, almost rose-like at peak ripeness.
Texture: Soft, silky pulp with minimal fibre.
Skin: Thin and golden-yellow, becoming almost translucent when fully ripe.
Connoisseurs often describe the taste as honeyed, with a lingering floral note and a refined sweetness that makes Zardalu truly memorable.
In 2018, the Zardalu mango was granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Government of India, a legal recognition that only Bhagalpur-grown mangoes can be sold under the Zardalu name.
This tag is significant for several reasons:
Despite the GI tag, genuine Zardalu remains relatively rare outside Bihar, making it one of India’s most underappreciated heritage mangoes.
Because of its natural sweetness and low fibre content, Zardalu is ideal for:
Because of its short season and limited geographic origin, Zardalu is not easily found in supermarkets outside Bihar. The best way to enjoy authentic fruit is to order from trusted sellers who source directly from Bhagalpur orchards, ensuring freshness, authenticity and careful packaging.
At Aamrai Organic, we celebrate India’s mango diversity and are committed to bringing heritage varieties like Zardalu to mango lovers across the country. Working closely with trusted growers, we strive to preserve and showcase the remarkable stories, traditions and flavours that make Indian mangoes truly exceptional.
Keep an eye on our Mango Variety collection during the June-July season to catch fresh Zardalu when it becomes available.
The Zardalu mango is more than a fruit. It is Bhagalpur’s gift to India’s mango lovers, carrying centuries of history, culture and craftsmanship in every golden bite.
At Aamrai Organic, our mission is to bring these extraordinary mango varieties to discerning consumers while supporting the growers who have nurtured them for generations. If you appreciate authenticity, heritage and naturally grown fruit, make this the year you discover the magic of Zardalu.
