The festive season has brought in almost perfect conditions for flowering and fruit setting with night time temperatures of 19-22C and low humidity. Currently about a quarter of our trees in Aamrai have good flowering and this should increase in the next week before 2022 ends. The current flowering should bear fruit after mid April provided the weather holds good.
A variety of flowerings are observed in the farms every year due to reasons such as availability/lack of nutrition or certain minerals, water, sunlight, age of tree, position of branch in the tree, type of seed/graft…..etc and many cannot be explained…………
The nutrition and sunlight available is used either for vegetative growth, i.e. leaves or reproductive growth, i.e. flowering or fruits. Normally fresh young leaves are first seen which are yellow/light green in colour and these will turn dark green over the next month or so.
Ideally once these leaves turn dark green and are fully matured, only then flowering will start.
However, sometimes, flowering and fresh leaves will both come out simultaneously……………just a vagary of nature……….
